"Here at Boortkol, there was an ancient wisteria with branches trailing all over the ground. 'We had better do something about supporting this wisteria,' I said to the owner on our preliminary tour of inspection. And so the pergola was built."

Lilies lining the surface of the pond, the flashing colors of a fish nearby, rocks placed with care at the pond's edge.
The small detail is what brings one in to the largeness of the outside. A clay pot filled with anemones at the edge of the patio, a low fence with Japanese lanterns hung at just the right intervals to light the rock garden at dusk. We anchor the vastness of the landscape with deft touches that don't so much finish as begin.

"Stamping down the loose soil to the original level, tying the tree to the stake, and watering the ground were the last operations before finally standing back and trying to imagine that this unremarkable stick would one day turn into a whitebeam whose half-opened leaves in spring look like the flowers of some glamorous magnolia."
