"Closely planted trees give glorious effects in moonlight, cool and restful shade in the summer."

–Edna Walling

The significance of natural light and shade,
and their effect on our feelings,
is where landscape design begins.
A mass of decorative grasses blowing in the wind, back-lit by the western sun, can strongly suggest flowing water. The reflecting surface of a still pond, the moon's glow, the shade and shadows of trees, shrubs, and tall, attenuated flowers. Under the right hand, the proper design of the landscape harnesses the power and possibilities of light.

"Light splashed this morning on the shell-pink anemones swaying on their tall stems, down blue-spiked veronica light flowed in rivulets."

–Stanley Kunitz
